James Martin shares hobby he picked up during six-month recovery from cancer treatment

From cars to remote control planes…

| Updated:

James Martin previously opened up about getting better following his cancer treatment – and what he did to occupy his time as he laid low.

Back in 2018, TV chef James was diagnosed with facial cancer. However, fans were not informed until July 2023 – when he shared the news via a statement.

At the time had been accused of ‘bullying’ members of production and accused of having a temper tantrum. He later apologised for his behaviour by stating: “Lessons have been learned.”

And, back in May, James gave a rare insight into how he coped during his cancer treatment.

Earlier this year, James appeared on the Spooning podcast. And the conversation soon turned to the topic of James’ hobbies.

Host Mark Wogan said: “You have got what one would call, an extensive car collection.” James replied: “I like cars.”

I’ve had a new hobby while I’ve been recovering.

Mark added: “I’m in admiration and envy of what you have in your garage.” James then said: “At the end of the day you have got to have a hobby outside of work. The cars are on thing.”

Explaining how he’s acquired a new hobby amid his cancer treatment, the Saturday Morning said: “I’ve actually not been well recently. So I’ve had a new hobby while I’ve been recovering.

“Because I knew it would be a six-month process of getting better and going in and going out. So I’ve got into building remote control jet planes.”

‘Onwards and upwards’

James appeared on Lorraine where he issued a health update ahead of the podcast chat. Speaking to James, Lorraine said to the chef: “Things are good, everything is good for you, isn’t it?”

“Yes,” he told her after she asked if everything was good. He then added: “The stitches are falling out.”

James shared more details as he revealed: “As you know, last time you were on [James Martin’s Saturday Morning] I was in the middle of operations and bits and pieces.”

He then added: “But as we speak, the stitches are falling out of my body at the moment. That’s all clear,” he added. “So onwards and upwards.”

James Martin Saturday Morning airs on Saturdays; His Great British Adventures is on ITV1 today (July 3) at 2pm.
