GMB star Charlotte Hawkins on behind-the-scenes support for Kate Garraway

Derek Draper died in January following his long Covid battle

Kate Garraway has been branded an “absolute trooper” by her GMB colleague Charlotte Hawkins following the death of her husband Derek Draper.

Derek died in January at the age of 56 following his long battle with Covid-19 and its after-effects.

Kate, who cared for Derek alongside carers until his death, has been praised by Charlotte and is receiving support from her team at Good Morning Britain.

As she attended the TRIC Awards on Tuesday, Charlotte was asked how Kate is doing following Derek’s death.

Charlotte told OK! Magazine: “She’s been an absolute trooper and she’s gone through so much. Our hearts have gone out to her and she knows we’re all there to support her in whatever way she needs.

“We’re so full of love and admiration. She’s just honestly coped with everything so brilliantly. I know how hard it’s been for her.”

The TV star added: “I know she feels like she’s surrounded by love.”

Earlier in June, Kate marked an emotional first Father’s Day without Derek. She said she and her two children – Darcey and Billy – visited Derek’s grave on the day.

She explained to fans on Instagram: “So yesterday was one of those days the kids and I knew would be tough. #fathersday – the day when everyone wants to celebrate their daddy.

“We started by visiting Derek’s grave early – and talked about all the amazing things we loved about him, the daft things he did to make us laugh and all the things he has given us that we’ll never forget.”

Kate added: “We have so much to be grateful for. We’re also so grateful to still have my amazing dad in our lives and Derek’s dad too.”

The star has also opened up about her grief recently. As she attended the Prince’s Trust Awards, Kate told the Mirror.: “I’m only at the beginning of grief really. I’m just three months in so there are many ups and downs to come.”
